June Newsletter
While last month was dedicated more toward technique and preparing for the Fall season this month will be taking a different trend due to many of our members attending Fargo nationals, Disney duals, or national duals. In order to cater to all of our members, the wrestling room will be split up into two groups, wrestlers who are training and wrestlers looking toward the Fall season. For the wrestlers looking toward the Fall we will be focused more on technique, allowing for personal time to work on your own personal preferences of moves. This groups will be run very similar to how last month’s practices were.
Last month we continually improved our front headlock position and by the end of the month I was very pleased at the production. Our end of summer goal was to be able to score a snap down, front headlock on 95% of everyone in the state and it seems that we are well on our way of achieving that goal. With that said though, we must continue to drill it as well as work on other areas of the move. That is why this month we will work on the position, motion, and technique needed to snapp our opponent down. This technique not only uses "heavy hands" as many call it, but our legs, hips, motion, and stance in order to generate the necessary power to move our opponent out of position enough to snap his head down. Each day we will spend time developing our snap in stages. This technique is not only crucial to knocking our opponent down, but also to set up our high crotch, duck under, fireman’s carry, and single leg. We must keep in mind that we are not becoming mindless head pounders, but that this is a technique and set up that we all must use effectively at the correct time.
For the training group, we will be looking to prepare you for your upcoming tournaments. We will increase the intensity of the daily drill session and I will personally run you through a ten minute workout that will require you to push yourself as well as your partner through numerous style-specific drills. At these times we will pick up the resistance that we give to our partner to 85%. We must drill as if in a match situation. If you do not train intense and practice hard daily, pushing yourself every step of the way, you WILL not be prepared for nationals. Too many wrestlers expect to be in good shape by working out only a couple days before going to Fargo. If you are serious about doing well at Fargo or any of the dual competitions you must be working out daily. I will inform the wrestlers that are training of what they should be doing on the days that Team Champion does not have practice. Distance running, sprint exercises, running stairs or hills, weight lifting, and core training should be a part of your daily regime in order to be fully prepared to attend the upcoming tournaments. All month long we should be increasing our repetitions and distance while decreasing the time it takes to accomplish our daily workouts. Along with this, we will spend 10 – 15 minutes on conditioning after practice is over, to ensure peak physical shape, keeping in mind that this will never happen if we only exercise at practice. You must run, lift, and if possible wrestle on Team Champion off days.
Lastly, to all of our members preparing for the upcoming competition, Good Luck.
